6 Worst Oscar Winners of All Time

Whether for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, or Best Director, there has been some winner who could charitably be said to have been less than deserving of the Oscar. Some winners have benefited from weak competition, others were rewarded for the entirety of their careers, and at least one manged to win because of threats to Academy voters. Because a comprehensive list would be exhausting, here are six of the most egregious winners of the Academy Award.

1.  Victor Fleming for ‘Gone With the Wind’ – 1939

Yes, Gone With the Wind was one of the greatest films ever made and one of the most identifiable classics of all time, but Victor Fleming was but one of three directors to work on the sprawling Civil War epic. Originally, producer David O. Selznick hired George Cukor to steer the adaptation of Margaret Mitchell’s novel, but three weeks into shooting – and after two years of pre-production –

5 Dumb Facts About That Dumb Kate Upton Mobile Game

Have you seen this ad yet? If you’ve been in front of a TV or on the internet, odds are you have (and if you haven’t, you’ve just woken up from a three-month coma and the first thing you did was come to Dorkly! Bless your heart.). This unusually epic, mightily expensive TV commercial is part of a larger ad campaign for a popular mobile app called Game of War: Fire Age – and we’re going to tell you a few things about the game (of war) that will blow your mind.

1. It’s currently running an ad campaign costing $40 million

Well, it’s finally happened – those stupid Evony ads from back in the day have hit the mainstream, as professional breast-haver Kate Upton has started appearing in actual TV commercials for a shitty knock-off game and beckoning potential players to “Come play, my lord” (well, “Come and play with me”, which really is somehow MORE groan-inducingly sexual). And it’s all for Game of War: Fire Age (the actual title, which feels like an SEO analyst vomited out after a long night of drinking and maximizing search engine

5 Amazing Things In Terrible Videogame Movies

5. The Thwomp Stomper Boots From Super Mario Bros.

undefined

This is a bad movie. A real bad movie. I remember being a tiny child watching this in the theater, having an existential crisis because my still-forming brain could not understand how I was in a theater, with a bag of popcorn, watching something called “Super Mario Bros: The Movie” and yet I wasn’t having fun. Fortunately, in the confusing miasma of unnecessary explanations, inauthentic grunge fashion, and mountains of slimy prosthetic fungus, one cool idea burned brightly.

No, not that. Sweet merciful lord let’s never mention this ever again.

I’m talking about Mother.Fucking. Jump. Boots.

One of the hugest mistakes that this movie made was cramming every little piece of Mario iconography through a dystopian sci-fi lens that made the Mushroom Kingdom as appealing as yesterday’s shirt. The only cool update were these ballistics-fired ski boots with some shock absorbers glued to sides. It’s actually a fun idea. How does Mario jump to dizzying heights and land with turtle-eviscerating force? The answer is steel-toed empowerment footwear.

4. The Crowd Reactions in Ace Attorney

A very very (very) literal adaptation of the first Phoenix Wright game, this movie

Available Online Car Games For Children

It is a well known fact that kids totally love car games especially in form of free online games, and maybe it is because of the adrenaline rush that it provides or maybe the general thrill offered by these games. Whatever the reason, they sure seem to be addicted to it. The mere sound of the countdown “Three, two, one, Go!” and the sound of the tires screeching and cars zooming is enough to capture anyone’s attention and interest.

Among the other popular free online games such as dress up games, shooting games, puzzle games or RPG (role playing games), car games have managed to carve a niche of their own and earn people’s love and interest. Almost instantly after the game starts, the player finds himself in a frenzy because of all those shifting of gears, flooring of gas pedals and the crazy maneuvering of the cars through the other competitors. One almost finds oneself vying for the ever-important lead upfront.

These car games are not only popular with kids but with adults too. The most popular car game is probably Need for Speed, which is an addiction for most people. In fact, these games have totally revolutionized the concept of

Playing Games Online is Just Fun and Entertainment

Recreation is an important part of our lives. Entertainment is a very common word used for some fun and relaxation for life. Entertainment could be TV shows, Movies or online games. Nowadays we have a lot of gadgets as well, to entertain ourselves. And in all these entertainment sources, Internet is one of the best sources ever available. Online media will not give only entertainment but knowledge as well. Life has become so dull and boring nowadays. People are too busy in their work schedule. No one has time for himself as well. And this is affecting people, not just mentally but physically as well. Everyone needs to have some break from their hectic schedule and busy life.

Online gaming is a technology rather than a genre, a mechanism for connecting players together rather than a particular pattern of game play. Online games are played over some form of computer network, now typically on the Internet. One advantage of online games is the ability to connect to multiplayer games, although single-player online games are quite common as well. An online game is played in some form of a computer network. This almost always uses the Internet or similar technology. Technology that

A Tricky Online Deck

Building a Commander deck is a constant challenge for me. I love variety and trying new experiences, which is why I have some self-imposed rules to make things interesting:

  • Pull from a pre-sorted set of cards set aside specifically for Commander. My “Commander Box” might be missing some esoteric options, but with a limited selection I can process from base idea to completed deck much faster.
  • Use only one copy of any card across all decks. This means only one deck gets Sol Ring, or Damnation, or Solemn Simulacrum. Powerful cards fit into almost any deck, but using a wider variety of options leaves room for less-used alternatives and wackier choices.
  • Kill my darlings. The more successful and powerful a deck feels, the more likely I am to take it apart to repurpose some of its pieces. Good decks are still the goal, but once a deck gets “solved,” it’s time for a new puzzle to sort through.

Roilmage’s Trick | Art by Johann Bodin

The real challenge for me isn’t in crafting something new—I cranked out an Oloro, Ageless Ascetic deck the day before traveling to Gen Con this year—but working up what I want to try out next. There are hundreds of

What types of video games improve brain function

From “brain games” designed to enhance mental fitness, to games used to improve real-world problems, to games created purely to entertain, today’s video games can have a variety of potential impacts on the brain. A new article argues that it is the specific content, dynamics, and mechanics of individual games that determine their effects on the brain and that action video games might have particularly positive benefits.

The article is published in the new issue of Policy Insights from the Behavioral and Brain Sciences, a Federation of Associations in Behavioral & Brain Sciences (FABBS) journal published by SAGE.

“The term video games refers to thousands of quite disparate types of experiences, anything from simple computerized card games to richly detailed and realistic fantasy worlds, from a purely solitary activity to an activity including hundreds of others, etc. A useful analogy is to the term food — one would never ask, ‘What is the effect of eating food on the body?’ Instead, it is understood that the effects of a given type of food depend on the composition of the food such as the number of calories; the percentage of protein, fat, and carbohydrates; the vitamin and mineral content; and

Video game warnings fall far short in rating tobacco content

Video games are not adequately rated for tobacco content, according to a new UC San Francisco study that found video gamers are being widely exposed to tobacco imagery.

The researchers concluded that a national ratings board set up more than 20 years ago is not a reliable source for learning whether video games contain tobacco imagery.

The study will be published online September 14 in Tobacco Control.

“Parents should stop relying on the ratings to screen for tobacco use in buying video games for their kids,” said first author Susan Forsyth, a PhD candidate at the UCSF School of Nursing.

Video games are a ubiquitous part of adolescent life in many countries. In the U.S., 88 percent of youth 8 to 18 years old play video games at least occasionally, according to a national study. Despite the widespread practice, there has been little research on whether smoking content is present in the games and whether games are being adequately rated for tobacco content.

Previous research has found that smoking imagery in movies can lead youths to begin smoking. In the video game study, the researchers sought to assess whether tobacco content was appropriately labelled. “The presence of tobacco imagery in (video) games

Everything We Know About The Nintendo NX

Nintendo made headlines this week when it was revealed that their upcoming system (code-named NX) is already in the hands of third party developers. Most news outlets were focused on getting details about Cabela’s Big Hunt Babysitting Backgammon. I, on the other hand, was more interested in the console. Here’s everything I was able to gather.

An incredible photograph of an NX development kit. Note how the white screen indicates the power is on, and how discs are read one half at a time. The Nintendo NX will be made by Nintendo. Nintendo decided not to have the system designed and manufactured by another company, like Sony or Krispy Kreme.

Its code name is the Nintendo NX. This will be the final name of the system. Or it will change to a different name. Remember, Nintendo has had some funky code names in the past (Project Reality, Dolphin) and they usually settle on sensible, appealing names for their final products (Wavebird, Wii U, GameCube).

When will it come out? Our money is on a date that comes after today, October 21st 2015. To maximize their profits Nintendo will likely put the console on sale within 100 years of manufacturing the hardware. If

Game of Thrones’ Natalie Dormer Talks Margaery’s Ambition

At New York Comic-Con today, Game of Thrones star Natalie Dormer had some fun talking about her character Margaery Tyrell, while also dropping what could be the tiniest of hints about the future of Margaery.

Spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 5 follow.

As fans know, Margaery’s fortunes took a turn for the worse last season when she was thrown in jail by the High Sparrow. But prior to that, Margaery had her eye on the Iron Throne, of course. Dormer was asked about what kind of threat her character poses to Lena Headey’s Cersei, who also has a thing for that Throne.

“What a massive compliment that you think she’s a threat!” said Dormer. “Oh God, I love working with Lena so much. Because Margaery is trying to be Cersei. She wants to be the mother of the king. I mean, she wants to have a child with him who winds up on the Iron Throne. And Cersei knows that. So it’s like the Cold War — mutually assured destruction! But it got really interesting last season and they’ve got new problems. So who knows… The enemy of my enemy is my friend, maybe?”

Is that an indication that Margaery and Cersei

Pan Review

Stories that expand the world of Peter Pan are not exactly new and, unsurprisingly, some succeed while others do not. Joe Wright’s origin story for the character, Pan, definitely falls into the latter category.

It is very early on in the proceedings when we know that there is something off about the film. It all goes badly at the orphanage where we meet Levi Miller’s Peter. The nun in charge of the Lambeth Home for Boys is Mother Barnabas (Kathy Burke), and she doesn’t merely hide food from the kids who haven’t got enough to eat, she actually hides the records for each child as well.

Before we can spend too much time pondering why that might be, we learn that Mother Barnabas and the nuns are selling orphans to the Neverland pirates. The pirates in turn need the kids as slaves to dig up crystals of fairy dust for their nefarious leader, Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman) who appears on the scene as the slaves shout the lyrics to Smells Like Teen Spirit.

This is the problem with Pan. Any of the above could become part of an enjoyable film telling us how Peter becomes legend, the incidents just need some explanation; to be

Justice League Dark Movie to Shoot Next Year With Scott Rudin Guillermo del Toro Producing

Warner Bros. is reportedly moving ahead with their long-gestating Justice League Dark movie, also known as Dark Universe. Guillermo del Toro will no longer direct the movie, but is still aboard to produce the DC Comics adaptation — a task that will see him getting an assist from an Oscar-winning Hollywood heavyweight.

Famed producer Scott Rudin (Steve Jobs, The Social Network, No Country for Old Men) is said to have come aboard the project. (Factoid: Rudin was the inspiration for Kevin Spacey’s raging, demoralizing producer character in Swimming With Sharks.)

“Sources confirm that Rudin is moving quickly on this one, making updates to the script and approaching directors. The project is now a priority for Warner Bros., with our sources also reporting that the studio is looking to shoot the superhero team-up film in 2016,” according to The Tracking Board.

Even more interesting, the site claims, the “group established in Dark Universe will separately co-exist with the main Justice League team, much like how Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy operate individually from the Avengers. Though, the plan is to eventually bridge the worlds and plant Dark Universe members in other DC titles.”

And as the DC film and TV universes will be kept separate,

The Final Girls Review

The Final Girls’ meta approach to horror genre tropes is far more clever and entertaining than expected.

As the original Scream made readily apparent years ago, there are rules to horror movies, especially ’80s slasher films.

While Scream brought a movie-like slasher to the (then) present, The Final Girls takes a somewhat different tack, sending its characters back into an ’80s slasher movie. That may sound like a recipe for disaster, but director Todd Strauss-Schulson pulls it off.

Taissa Farmiga stars as Max Cartwright, a high schooler whose mother, Amanda (Malin Akerman), was once a famous scream queen but has never managed to get past those projects, particularly one called Camp Bloodbath. Before Final Girls truly gets started, Max loses her mother in a car accident and is still coping with the loss three years later.

On the anniversary of her mother’s death, Max decides to attend a screening of Camp Bloodbath and for reasons never explained, somehow finds herself, along with friends who were also at the screening, inside the movie. Much of Final Girls takes place in this film-within-the-film.

Writers Joshua John Miller and M.A. Fortin know the tropes of slasher films and not only offer

Fear the Walking Dead Season 1 Review

Warning: Full spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead’s first season follow…

The idea itself was solid. The notion was supportable. AMC would spin off its blockbuster hit The Walking Dead and feature a brand new set of characters over on the opposite side of the country. Surely, there’d be enough undead chaos to spread around. And so Fear the Walking Dead hit our airwaves this past summer with a quick six-episode first season (much like The Walking Dead did years back), ready to take us on another perilous journey through zombie terrain.

But there was an additional twist. Not only would there be new characters and new locations, but things would take place in the past. Not a prequel series, per se, but a story detailing the early days of the zombie outbreak in Los Angeles. The time period Rick Grimes skipped over while he was comatose in a hospital bed. Again, an interesting set up. Who wouldn’t want to see L.A. succumb to large scale mayhem and madness?

And during the first few episodes, there were definitely some effective moments/beats featuring a city in turmoil. From cops trying to take down a zombie on the freeway to a hospital surrounded by SWAT

Deadpool Is Now Officially an Avenger

As if being one of the most popular characters in the Marvel Universe wasn’t enough, Deadpool can now count himself an official member of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

Warning: spoilers for Avengers #0 follow!

Marvel released a standalone comic yesterday called Avengers #0, which featured several short stories aimed at paving the way for upcoming Avengers titles like New Avengers, The Ultimates and Uncanny Avengers. The latter story featured Deadpool carrying out a mission for Steve Rogers. Deadpool was tasked with stealing a sample of the Terrigen Mist cloud that has been making its way across the globe and spawning millions of new Inhumans. The reason? Because some mutants are beginning to have a bad reaction to the Mists, including Rogue.

After completing his mission, Steve Rogers surprised Deadpool with his very own Avengers ID card (endorsed by Barack Obama, no less). For a guy whose main super-power seems to be annoying his fellow heroes, Deadpool is certainly moving up in the world.

Look for Deadpool to be a regular member of the cast in the new volume of Uncanny Avengers (by writer Gerry Duggan and artist Ryan Stegman). The new Avengers Unity Squad is devoted to promoting cooperation among humans, mutants and Inhumans, and

Milla Jovavich’s Stunt Double Almost Killed on New Resident Evil Movie

Professional stuntwoman Olivia Jackson suffered a near-fatal accident on the set of Resident Evil: The Final Chapter back in September, and the extent of her injuries have just been reported.

Jackson was the stunt double of star Milla Jovovich.

“I sit down to write this post with a heavy heart, because a terrible accident rocked our set on Saturday the 5th of September” wrote Jovovich on her Facebook page. “My incredibly talented stunt double, Olivia Jackson, collided with a camera crane while performing a motorcycle stunt and it put her in the hospital with severe, multiple injuries.”

A friend of Jackson’s recently shared the list of her injuries, as reported by Jackson herself on her Facebook page. They included two weeks in a coma, brain bleed, brain swelling, crushed and degloved face, a severed main artery in her neck, broken ribs, paralyzed arm, shattered scapula, broken clavicle and humerus and amputated thumb, among others.

“I wasn’t personally there to witness it, but from the reports I got, it was awful”, continued Jovovich. “None of us have experienced anything like this in our careers making action films and hope we never do again, but the production reacted very quickly to ensure she received the best care and also in

Transformers Devastation Review

Just 10 minutes into Transformers: Devastation I’m in a fistfight with the monstrous Devastator. This and other epic boss battles are lovingly authentic to the ‘80s Transformers TV show and movie, right down to the original voice actors and rocking power ballad wailing in the background. But the appeal of this Transformers game isn’t solely pre-Michael Bay nostalgia: Devastation does a good job of transforming my favorite robots in disguise into a fun and energetic action game.

The polished cell-shaded look of these Generation One Autobots and Decepticons is amazing, with textures and animations that feel ripped right out of the 1986 movie. I could watch the detailed sequence where Optimus Prime changes into a big rig truck all day. Devastation nails the presentation angle, with colorful graphics that effectively capture the sights and sound of a decades-old cartoon adventure. The level of obsessive detail for everything Transformers is impressive, from the shiny metallic finish on each robot body down to the family station wagons and blocky cabs of the time sitting on the road. But the deeper I went into the story, the bland arenas and levels felt more and more forgettable. It’s disappointing, because the art direction nails

Hearts of Stone Review

The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone introduces its intriguing antagonist Olgierd von Everec by having him insightfully critique a stone sculpture of a famous artist, only to tip it over and watch it shatter to pieces. It’s a great introduction to a great character, but it also serves as a thematic jumping-off point for this excellent DLC chapter. Hearts of Stone is about taking the stoic, stone-like wall Geralt has always presented to his compatriots and to us, and bringing it crumbling down. The result is a Geralt quite unlike the one we’re used to, and one of the warmest, most human story threads in all of the Witcher 3.

Hearts of Stone does everything right on the gameplay side of things. Arachnomorphs, the new enemy type, are a blast to fight. They have the mobility to keep their distance from Geralt until they can web you from afar and engage on their terms, and if you try to disable and focus down one of them, the rest will swarm in to protect their own.

This same sophistication can be seen in the bosses you’ll fight during your 10 to 15-hour journey. From a giant, mutated, poison-spewing toad to the tornado

Steve Jobs Review

The last time Aaron Sorkin, America’s patron scribe of motor-mouthed smartasses, tackled a flawed techno-visionary on the big screen, he gave us his version of Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and, together with director David Fincher, one of the defining films of the 21st century. He’s back again, this time paired with Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire filmmaker Danny Boyle, to dramatize a strikingly similar anti-social networker; another big-brained, giant ego, control freak computer wiz kid whose inventions have, for better or worse, helped redefine modern human interaction.

Steve Jobs, who died in October 2011, was arguably a more iconic public figure than Zuckerberg. As Apple CEO, his various iProducts – Mac, Pod, Phone, etc – were game-changing devices and his role in Pixar’s CG animation success story was key. Yet, somewhat perversely, Sorkin opts to end his movie before the first iMac is announced to the world, and avoids any Pixar involvement entirely. From the very start, the film’s approach is entirely in keeping with Jobs’s own sometime corporate mantra and ethos: think different.

So, instead of a standard biopic, we get three distinct time frames (with occasional flashbacks interspersed), each a heightened, concertinaed version of three product launches: 1984’s Macintosh personal computing revolution,
